It must have been particularly unsettling to be a prostitute in London,England in 1888. In addition to the usual dangers that accompany such a profession, in the fall of that year, a madman — a butcher ofwomen – was on the prowl in the city’s East End. At least five women were murdered by a serial killer who’d led them to believe he was merely a customer. They met their ends in a most brutal fashion, and the crimes became known as the Ripper murders.

In one case, a victim’s kidney was removed and taken as a souvenir. In another, the victim’s sex organs were dissected. An equally gruesome case involved an interrupted amputation in which the killer left behind a partially removed leg. The city was whipped into a frenzy by news of these horrible murders. The press called this monster “Jack the Ripper.” The killer was bold, murdering his victims on the street in some cases, and leaving their eviscerated remains for any casual passerby to find.

According to popular belief, there were other victims, including one woman whose torso was discovered beneath a tarp and her arms and legs found floating in the Thames River. The Londonconstabulary (police department) ultimately attributed five murders, all female prostitutes, to the Ripper. These serial killings took place between Aug. 31 and Nov. 9, 1888. Two took place within an hour of each other on Sept. 30. That fall, London became a place of fear.

And then, as quickly as it began, the killing spree stopped. Jack the Ripper withdrew into the shadowiest corners of history.

For more than a century, countless people have doggedly pursued the true identity of Jack the Ripper. These Ripperologists use historical research and analysis from the London police and Scotland Yard’s 19th-century investigation to guide their efforts. Amateur criminologists and historians have nominated dozens of possible suspects in the case, none of whom have been definitively identified as Jack the Ripper. So the quest continues.

In 2002, popular crime fiction novelist Patricia Cornwell advanced her own theory of Jack the Ripper’s identity. She released “Portrait of a Killer: Jack the Ripper — Case Closed,” a nonfiction book in which she identifies her Ripper suspect. On Friday, July 15th, Art Conspiracy invites you to kick off your shoes and wiggle your toes in the grass (okay Astroturf) during its summertime SEED event,“Better Gnomes and Gardens,” at The Sons of Hermann Hall in Dallas. This salute to America’s iconic garden kitsch will feature classic gnomes and fanciful flamingos as recreated and remixed by local artists, all available to the highest bidder in a raucous cattle-call auction.

All attendees are highly encouraged to show up in garden party attire, play a round of Croquet, and enjoy a cool summery drink!

Live music will be provided by The Red 100’s, John Lefler (backed by a full band) and The Blurries. During SEED, the Con Artists of Art Conspiracy will also announce the nonprofit beneficiary that will receive funding from the organization’s fall 2011 event.

Proceeds raised will help Art Conspiracy fund its major event that will be held during the fall of 2011. Since 2005, Art Conspiracy has raised over $110,000 for local grassroots non-profits that provide arts and music programming for underserved audiences in north Texas!

Is it Genius or Very WTF? Either way I <3 it: 4-year-old Aelita Andre gets her own NY art show, sells paintings for $27K

Until—

A very close friend of mine showed me this image on her phone of a painting she saw at the Fort Worth Art Fest. The asking price of this AMMMMAZING painting was $10,000 (which was sadly way out of her price range). My friend then went on to ask me if I would create a similar, smaller, reproduction of it… Then I realized the AMMMMAZING painting wasn’t the original artwork of the painter who wanted $10,000 for it but rather that of a prolific young photographer.

Of course my friend debated me on the fact until I showed her other wise. She was floored because of my ability to recall visual references accurately. And I was floored because I was just reading a fricking article about THIS VERY SAME THING.

The whole thing didn’t sit well with me, so the next day I decided to contact Ms. Dangerously Dolly herself.
Here’s how the first email went:

“To Dangerously Dolly:

Fist let me start by saying: I FRICKING ADMIRE YOUR WORK! It is truly original and BAD ASS!!

With that being said have you considered copyrighting AND Registering your photos?
Just a few weeks ago there was an artist in Fort Worth, Texas, who painted a replica of your “Little Linda”. He wanted $10,000 for the original painting– which would be Great had it been ALL HIS CONCEPT.

If you were to copyright AND REGISTER select photos (the viral ones), you’d by law be entitled to a percentage of that said $10,000.

All the folks known (and unbeknownst to you) that are ripping off your works are LITERALLY ripping you off financially! I know art isn’t all business, but as women we Must be smart in business!!

Of course this was all small potatoes to her and this was her response to me:

Who was the artist? I don’t need to register my work in order to prove it’s mine. It’s copyrighted to me the minute I press the shutter button.

I don’t allow artist to sell the paintings based off my photos, anyone who paints them knows that.. So this must be a painting I never saw.

Dangerously Dolly”

I thought her response to my email to be honest, matter-of-factly (,and slightly cocky).

Until she realized this:

“Hey Bianca,

Ok, I found out who the artist was through other sources… It’s K. P[at]terson… Funny because he told me he would not be selling. I also found out the painting got sold.
I’m waiting to hear back from the artist to figure things out… He needed to tell me that he was going to paint to sell.. Technically he sold a replica of my vision to somebody.

Do you know what gallery/arts festival … it was?[...] Perhaps if it was an art gallery I can get ahold to see how much exactly it sold for and find any information from there [...]“
—
Now, if she Registered her image she wouldn’t have to prove that her photo came first and would be entitled to a chunk of that $10,000 without question!

Hmm…
If only I’d learn to take my own advice,
